Articulation Language Stuttering Hearing Voice Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Reading

Language
Children can have delays/disorders in any of these language areas:

  • Expressive language refers to the sounds and words that a child uses to communicate. Receptive language refers to what the child understands. Children can have delays/ disorders in either area or both.

  • Pragmatics is an area of language pertaining to social communication. It includes unspoken "rules" of language such as taking turns in a conversation, making eye contact, and having appropriate social interactions.

  • Nonverbal language refers to communicative acts such as pointing, handing for help, showing, gesturing, leading to desired object or activity, and turn taking. Nonverbal language is foundational for learning verbal language.
